Perimenopause & Menopause

Embracing Change Perimenopause typically begins in a woman's late 30s to early 40s & signifies the transition towards menopause. Hormonal fluctuations become more pronounced, leading to irregular menstrual cycles & changes in fertility. Women may experience physical symptoms such as hot flashes, night sweats, & vaginal dryness. Emotionally, this phase can be challenging as women grapple with a sense of loss, hormonal imbalances, & societal expectations tied to youthfulness.

Perimenopause & Menopause

Menopause, the cessation of menstrual periods, usually occurs around the age of 50. Alongside the physical changes, women may encounter a range of symptoms including:

  • Menstrual disorders:

Perimenopause is the transitional phase leading up to menopause, during which menstrual cycles may become irregular. Periods may be lighter or heavier, occur closer together or farther apart, or last for varying durations. Eventually, menstrual periods cease altogether during menopause

  • Menopause:

Menopause marks the end of a woman's reproductive years. It usually occurs around the age of 45 to 55 & is characterized by the cessation of menstrual periods. Women may experience symptoms such as hot flashes, night sweats, mood swings, vaginal dryness, & sleep disturbances.

  • Vasomotor symptoms:

Vasomotor symptoms, commonly known as hot flashes or night sweats, are common during perimenopause & menopause. They are characterized by sudden feelings of intense heat, often accompanied by sweating, flushing, & a rapid heartbeat.

  • Genitourinary symptoms:

The decline in estrogen levels during perimenopause & menopause can lead to various genitourinary symptoms, including vaginal dryness, itching, burning, or discomfort during sexual intercourse (dyspareunia), & increased urinary tract infections (UTIs).

  • Mood changes:

Hormonal fluctuations during perimenopause & menopause can contribute to mood swings, irritability, anxiety, & even symptoms of depression in some women. These emotional changes can vary in intensity & duration.

  • Sleep disturbances:

Many women experience sleep disturbances during perimenopause & menopause, including difficulty falling asleep, staying asleep, or experiencing poor sleep quality. Factors such as hot flashes, night sweats, & hormonal changes can contribute to sleep disruptions.

  • Osteoporosis:

The decline in estrogen levels during menopause can increase the risk of developing osteoporosis, a condition characterized by reduced bone density & increased susceptibility to fractures. Adequate calcium intake, vitamin D supplementation, regular exercise, & hormone replacement therapy, if appropriate, can help mitigate the risk.

  • Cognitive changes:

Some women may experience cognitive changes during perimenopause & menopause, such as memory lapses, difficulty concentrating, or "brain fog." The relationship between menopause & cognitive function is complex, & more research is needed in this area.

  • Sexual function changes:

The decline in estrogen levels can affect sexual desire (libido), vaginal lubrication, & overall sexual satisfaction. These changes, along with genitourinary symptoms, can impact a woman's sexual health & well-being.
